BORN TODAY in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia – Herbert Henry (“Smoky”) Dawson MBE, Australia’s first singing cowboy.

Law and Order: In Cape Town, South Africa, the Foster Gang commit an armed robbery at the American Swiss Watch Company, taking £5000 worth of watches, rings and jewellery. Three days later Foster is arrested, and later still he is sentenced to 12 years hard labour.

Early Flight: The Zeppelin airship LZ-15 is destroyed during a forced landing just over two months after its first flight (16th January).

Women’s suffrage: in the UK Parliament, Lord Robert Cecil advocates the deportation of suffragettes “otherwise lynch law is inevitable”.

Meanwhile the (UK) “National Political League” organises a meeting at the Kingsway Hall in London to protest against the forced feeding of suffragettes in prisons. It claims that over 1500 people attend the meeting
