BORN TODAY, in London, England – James Lablache Stewart, better known by his stage name, Stewart Granger. Son of a Major, grandson of an actor, great grandson of an opera singer. Allen Quartermain in King Solomon’s mines; the Prisoner of Zenda; cut-throat Jeremy Fox in Moonfleet; and a later Virginian, among many other roles.

World Affairs: in the Hague, a court orders Italy to pay damages to France for the seizure of two cargo steamers during the 1912 Turkish-Italian War.
