BORN TODAY: In Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England – Elsie Tu (nee Hume, later Elliott), missionary to China (expelled to Hong Kong in 1949); Hong Kong social activist, campaigner against corruption and colonialism; CBE (1987); “Hongkong’s most widely admired personality” in 1993; retired from politics in 1999 (aged 86). Critic as recently as this April (2013) of Hong Kong’s “tycoons with no conscience” [South China Morning Post, 22nd april 2013].
