BORN TODAY: At the Palace in Brunei town, in the Sultanate of Brunei – Ahmad Tajuddin Ahazul Khairi Waddien ibni Almarhum Sultan Mohammad Jamalul Alam II,  the 27th Sultan of Brunei from the age of 11 until his death in a Singapore Hospital on the day before his 37th birthday – 3rd June 1950.

Women’s suffrage:  Emily Wilding Davison throws herself in front of the King’s Horse at the (UK) Epsom Derby. She dies four days later, never having regained consciousness.

Arms Race: The German Imperial Navy launches the battleship SMS Markgraf.

Sport: at the Isle of Man TT (motorcycle) race, a record 147 contestants compete. Hugh Mason wins the 7 lap senior (500cc) event at an average of 48 miles per hour. Frank Bateman becomes the race’s first ever fatal crash victim.
