BORN TODAY: in Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan, Lieutenant Akira Yamamoto, biplane fighter pilot who took part in the attack on Pearl Harbour, including shooting down a civilian sightseeing pleasure aircraft shortly before arriving at the target area. Wounded by gunfire from an enemy ship over Iwo Jima in June 1944 and shot down and killed during November 1944 (aged 31) during the first B29 bomber attacks on the Japanese mainland.
