BORN TODAY: in Chicago, Illinois –  the first Velika Gospa procession of the local Croatian community, marking a miraculous intervention against the Turks in 1715.


Labour Relations: In Dublin, Ireland,  actions by employers to suppress the emergence of trade unions culminate in them issuing the infamous ‘document’, locking out any worker who refuses to sign a pledge to disown the growing Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union. The Dublin lock-out begins.


Society and Culture:  In the UK, the passing of the Ancient Monuments Consolidation and Amendment Act recognises for the first time that there are physical remains of the nation’s history which are so special and so significant that the state has a duty to ensure their continued survival.
