BORN TODAY: in Twin Falls, Idaho – “Deep Throat” (aka William Mark Felt), the FBI associate director at the centre of the Watergate scandal which topples President Nixon in the 1970s.


Shipping Accidents:

~ The passenger ship “State of California” strikes a reef in Alaskan waters and sinks with the loss of 40 passengers and crew.


~ Bombadier Elias Ashton rescues a number of men who have jumped from a junk stricken by a typhoon in Hong Kong, an act of  bravery for which he is later awarded a Royal Humane Society bronze medal.


Sport: At the “Eccentric Fireman’s Games” Paddy Ryan sets the first world record for hammer throwing, a record which will not be beaten for the next quarter century.
