~ in Oakville, Alabama – James Cleveland (“Jesse”) Owens – “Son of a sharecropper and grandson of slaves, who won four Gold Medals at the Berlin Olympics in 1936”.


~ In Foochow, China – Hsiao Chien (“Kenneth”) Lo, tennis champion, Cambridge graduate, former diplomat and importer of modern Chinese art who turned his talent to Chinese cuisine aged 40 and became “the foremost expert in Britain on Chinese food” [The Independent].


~ in Kinjo, Nishi Kasugai, Aichi, Japan – Eiji Toyoda, mechanical engineering graduate from Tokyo University (1936) who joined the family auto business and became President of the Toyota Motor Company in 1967.
