Society, culture and war: The Honourable Julian Henry Francis Grenfell, aged 25, educated at Eton and Oxford, son of Baron Desborough (English Member of Parliament, educated at Harrow and Oxford ) and grandson of Charles William Grenfell (MP), great grandson of Charles Grenfell (MP) and great-great grandson of Charles Pascoe Grenfell (MP)… Grenfell junior,  who is currently posted with the (British) Royal Dragoons in Potchefstroom, South Africa, writes home to his father celebrating the pheasant shooting at his home in England, and reflecting on the industrial strife in South Africa.

As an aspiring poet, later this year he will write from the Western front: “I adore war. It is like a big picnic but without the objectivelessness of a picnic. I have never been more well or more happy.” In May 1915 he will be killed by a shrapnel injury to the head. In July 1915 his brother will also be killed within a mile of the spot where Julian receives his fatal wound.
