Istanbul: Turkey declares war on the Triple Alliance of Russia, France and Britain.

War at Sea: In the Pacific, at the Battle of Coronel, a German  squadron attacks a British squadron, destroying and sinking HMS Monmouth and HMS Good Hope.


Western Front: In the continuing warfare around Ypres, German forces capture two “strategic” ridges as Messine and Wytschaete. Kitchener confers with French command at Dunkirk and promises to send 1 million British troops to France over the next 18 months. [Burg and Purcell]. Presumably, the million were not consulted about this decision…
