18th March, 1915 (Thursday)

The Dardanelles: British and French naval forces make another huge push at the Straits, forcing the Turks to abandon the fort at Chanak, which is in ruins. This gain comes, however, at a heavy cost in terms of vessels lost (including three battleships) and sailors killed. The allies withdraw, and begin to amend their plans, focusing now on landing troops at Gallipoli instead of (or as well as) pressing on with a naval push through to Constantinople.
