Early flight: the German Zeppelin airship L-2 explodes in mid-air, 600 feet over the city of Johannisthal (now part of Berlin) killing all 28 passengers and crew on board.

BORN TODAY, in Hyderabad, India – Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Kenyon Burnett GCB DFC AFC high flying high flyer who was later Chairman of the All England [Wimbledon] Lawn Tennis Club for 10 years. He died in 2011, aged 98.

Arms Race: Pluton, a French minelayer is launched in Nantes. Within 18 months she will be laying mines in the english channel/ la manche before being re-assigned to duties off Syria and in the Dardanelles by 1915.

Society and Culture. Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross in or around 1820) dies of pneumonia. Ex-slave, anti-slavery campaigner, union spy during the American civil war and later a supporter of the suffragettes, she is buried with full military honours at Fort HIll cemetery, in Auburn, Alabama.

Transportation: Stockport (now part of Greater Manchester) in the UK, introduces its first (3) electrified trollybuses, less than two years after they first appear in England (in Leeds and Bradford, in June 1911).

In the Caribbean, Liuetenant J H Towers arrives in Guantanamo Bay having set a new record of 46 minutes from Santiago de Cuba in a Curtiss Flying Boat.
