War at Sea: In the Cocos Islands, a small archipelago 500km west of Costa Rica, the Australian cruiser “Sydney” surprises the German cruiser “Emden”, which has been destroying allied shipping the Indian Ocean and Pacific for the last three months. After a short but fierce battle which takes over 130 lives, Emden is beached and destroyed.

A final resting place far from home: Ahmad Khan, from the 3rd Sappers and Miners company, who died of his wounds while being transported from France to an English hospital, becomes the first soldier from the Indian Expeditionary Force to be buried in Britain –  at the “Mohammedan” Cemetery at Brookwood in Surrey.
